WHIST GROUP

Group Leaders:  Sandra Forester/Sue Mercer

We will meet fortnightly on the first and third Mondays of each month at 3pm at the Ogisaka Garden Hotel in Dénia.  Our first meeting will be on Monday 4th March.

We are playing the type of whist you play at whist drives in England where you progress round the room (or not if you keep losing, as I have often done!)   We won't be giving away prizes so hopefully nobody will take it too seriously!!

RULES

PROGRESSIVE WHIST

Players take a seat at any table and decide whether they will play as lady or gent.  The gents do all the shuffling and dealing of cards and also collect the tricks.

The Cards

A standard deck of 52 cards is used, ranking from highest to lowest;

A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2

Trumps

Each suit is trumps in turn according to the score card

The Deal

Deal and play are clockwise, and each player is dealt 13 cards, one at a time, beginning with the player to the dealer's left and finishing with the dealer's last and 13th card.

The Play

The person to the dealer's left leads first and thereafter the winner of the trick leads to the next. Any card may be led. Players must follow suit. If they can't follow suit they may play a trump if they have one otherwise any card they choose.

The trick is won by the highest trump played to it. If no trumps are played, the Trick is won by the highest card of the suit led.

Scoring

Each player notes on their scorecard how many tricks their partnership has made and gets it initialled by the opposition.

When everyone has finished playing the hand the organiser announces the time to move on.

At this instruction, winning ladies move in a clockwise direction to the next table and winning gents in an anti-clockwise direction to the next table.   The losing gent moves next to the losing lady so that in the next game they will be playing with different partners.

Finish

At the end of the session, at a predetermined time, the winners will be those who have amassed the most tricks.  In the event of a dispute the organiser’s decision is final.
